SUM Associate, VISTA Horizons Student Enrichment Program HGW
Horizons Greater Washington (HGW) provides nearly 400 students in and around DC with access to award-winning, tuition-free summer enrichment programming with the aim to reduce summer learning loss and bridge opportunity gaps. Students in 1st through 9th grade receive six hours of instruction, five days a week, for six consecutive weeks on the campuses of three independent schools in the metro DC area. In small classes led by professional teachers, our students are exposed to high-quality project-based curricula focused on literacy and STEAM. Swimming and other confidence boosting activities round out a summer filled with new experiences and positive development. On average, HGW students start the school year having gained on average 4–12 weeks in reading and math. AmeriCorps VISTA members will work directly with the Site Director and Assistant Site Director at one of our two sites to support their individual program in the Greater Washington DC area. This position is ideal for an individual seeking rich, professionally rewarding experience in either the nonprofit or education sectors.
