'20-'21 Family Services Development Associate VISTA

The Child Care Action Council promotes & nurtures early learning communities where families & children thrive through services that help families equitably access quality child care & early learning opportunities. The VISTA will support capacity building for Margie’s Crisis Nursery, Kaleidoscope Play & Learn (KP&L), Raising A Reader (RAR) & BlockFest. The Crisis Nursery prevents child abuse & neglect by providing childcare vouchers to families experiencing a crisis. KP&L playgroups help children ages 0-5 & their parent(s)/family caregivers have more equitable access to resources, learn about early learning in a fun supportive group & encourage leadership, all factors that help participants emerge from poverty. We serve parents with potential for high risk pregnancy including teen parents, families where low income or mental health issues are present & Spanish speaking families. RAR fosters healthy brain development, parent-child bonding & early literacy skills critical for school and life success. RAR engages children, parents & teachers in early literacy strategies that help young children prepare for kindergarten. The relationship that comes from the family’s “book-cuddling” time creates a positive feeling in children related to reading. BlockFest, a research-based exhibit, raises awareness of early math & science learning by offering hands-on block play experiences to families with young children. BlockFest supports parents & children to form an emotional bond during the learning experience & has been shown to increase parent knowledge of early development in math/science education while also providing opportunities to increase social skills & literacy opportunities for young children. The VISTA will be a member of United Way of Thurston County’s VISTA team, made up of 19 other VISTA members & supported by the VISTA Leader, who coordinates professional development opportunities, provides individualized support & resources & supports the program’s success.
