FCS-JFS-Life Stories Summer Associate
 
 
 
The Jewish Family Services (JFS), is the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation (YAJF) social agency that is located on the north side of Youngstown. The purpose of the agency is to respond to the personal, emotional, and financial needs of people in the community, Jewish and non- Jewish, in Mahoning, Trumbull, and Columbiana counties, and Pennsylvania (Sharon and New Castle area). JFS provides counseling, programs, education, referrals, and kosher meals to the clients’ houses, guardian and financial affairs of people unable to do so for themselves. The JFS VISTA Summer Associate, in collaboration with the JFS, will work with the local senior community. The VISTA will meet with seniors on a weekly basis, listen to their fascinating life stories, and create a short book of each of the seniors. The ideal VISTA candidate is a person with patience, empathy, and affinity for the elderly population. The VISTA should be self-confident to ask questions and interview seniors, listen to the story behind the words, and have the ability to execute a written story from an interview. The VISTA will receive professional training in writing life stories and will gain the opportunity to influence the quality of life of the elderly in the community and create a healthy future for them. Candidates must have knowledge of Microsoft Office software, clear and coherent writing skills, excellent time management skills, and the ability to work independently. The VISTA Summer Associate will receive a full membership to the Jewish Community Center facilities (Gym, fitness center, indoor & outdoor pool, etc.) for the ten-week project summer term.

Member Duties : The JFS Life Stories Summer Associate will meet weekly with the seniors for the ten-week duration of the project. The Summer Associate will conduct interviews; transcribe the interviews into a narrative that will be expressed in a written story and published in book form; submit drafts to the Program Manager and the participants every week; conduct evaluations at the beginning, middle, and end of the project.
