SUM Associate, VISTA-Horizons Student Enrichment Program BFS
Each summer, Horizons works with 135 low-income K – 8th students in the downtown Brooklyn Navy Yard housing communities and surrounding area. Our free 6-week, academic summer program is hosted on the campus of Brooklyn Friends School with the goal of reducing summer slide to combat the growing opportunity gap in education. Students begin the day at 8:30am and focus on math, literacy and reading skills through project based learning in small classes led by professional teachers. In the afternoon, students are exposed to enriching arts and STEM classes for social-emotional growth including coding, robotics, dance with Mark Morris, chorus and band. Swimming, field trips and other confidence-boosting activities break down barriers to success and expose children to new opportunities. This is an opportunity for motivated, committed individuals who are passionate about education equity and working hands-on within an intervention program. The ideal candidate should have some background of volunteer service as well as the desire to take on responsibilities that will challenge themselves and make an impact on the community. This candidate should also have experience working with children and enjoy working with youth. This is an AmeriCorps VISTA position and the individual will work directly with the classroom staff and executive team.
