ShareCorps - Conneaut Human Resources - Community Garden

The Conneaut Human Resources Center (CHRC) is a nonprofit dedicated to making social services more available to the community in a one-stop setting. These services include a food pantry, emergency assistance, soup kitchen, and food boxes for low income seniors. The CHRC has also developed a small Community Garden at the Center called CHEWS (Choosing Healthy Eating for Wellness & Strength) that has produced fresh produce, including peppers, tomatoes, cabbage, broccoli, carrots, and more, for the Conneaut Food Pantry to distribute to CHRC clients. This program provides nutritious meal-prep additions to the non-perishable food items provided through the Food Pantry. Currently, garden volunteers work their designated areas and through the partnership of the Trillium Center and Leah Wolf, MPH, learn about planting, identification of plants, cultivating produce, and food preservation techniques.

Member Duties : The VISTA member will be determining the unmet needs of our clients and how we can improve garden services to ensure we are providing healthy produce to all of our clients. At the same time, the VISTA will develop training curricula and coordinate classes to help clients learn gardening techniques, food preservation, and the importance of proper nutrition. Volunteer recruitment and tracking is a critical element of this project, as we ensure sustainability through volunteer involvement and make sure each volunteer is effective in their role. The VISTA will be crucial in developing innovative ways to demonstrate to children and families in need, as well as other community volunteers, how they can be part of and benefit from the Community Garden. Additionally, the VISTA will work to develop a family garden model to make it easier for families to grow their own produce and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
