Stewards VISTA: Friends of Katahdin Woods & Waters
Friends of Katahdin Woods & Waters was formed to galvanize the support of individuals, foundations, businesses, and non-profits to provide a margin of excellence beyond what the National Park Service can provide for Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, established as a unit of the National Park Service in 2016. Our mission is to preserve and protect the outstanding natural beauty, ecological vitality and distinctive cultural resources of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument and surrounding communities for the inspiration and enjoyment of all generations. We are a special Friends group in that our mission specifically emphasizes our impact and the national monument’s impact on the surrounding communities. The ultimate goal for the AmeriCorps VISTA is to improve the economic livelihood of youth in the Katahdin Region through the establishment of innovative place-based education practices in their communities. The VISTA will work with Friends of Katahdin Woods & Waters is to draft a community-owned five- to ten-year strategic plan for place-based education in the Katahdin Region. Through working with community members and Friends of Katahdin Woods & Waters staff on delivery of two major programs (Katahdin Learning Project and Baxter Youth Conservation Corps), the VISTA will develop firsthand knowledge of the programs that the strategic plan will benefit. The plan will ultimately improve the economic and educational livelihoods of Katahdin Region Youth, who live in an economically depressed region and attend Title I schools. Katahdin Region youth will be among the first to seize the economic and educational opportunities offered to them as citizens in the gateway communities of a newly established unit of the National Park Service.
