Urban Roots Food & Farming Education OneStar VISTA
Urban Roots transforms the lives of young people by giving them leadership opportunities on our urban farm while growing food for the community. We want your help to reach even more young people in Central Texas. Come research, design develop, and pilot the next generation of hands-on food and farming based educational programs at Urban Roots. You will lead the project to deepen and develop partnerships with schools and school districts and create a new set of programs including field trips, after-school activities, and camps. These programs will be grounded in hands-on, project-based activities for K-12 students that take advantage of the unique and exciting educational opportunities found in growing and eating food. Urban Roots is currently the only farm in Austin offering educational farm tours to K-12 students. By expanding our capacity for educational tours and other school programs, Urban Roots can help meet a need for more free educational field trips in Austin and its surrounding areas. A study of 400 adults conducted by the U.S. Travel Association found that, regardless of gender, ethnicity or socioeconomic status, youth who take educational trips have better grades (59%), higher graduation rates from high school (95%) and college (63%), and greater income as adults (12% higher annually). Field trips give economically disadvantaged students in particular the opportunity to experience things outside of the classroom that they may not otherwise get to experience. As described above, over half of students in Austin ISD are economically disadvantaged and those numbers just outside of Austin are even higher. With a greater capacity to provide engaging, hands-on educational tours and other school programs for students in these areas, Urban Roots will help these students achieve their highest potential.
