Doctors and lawyers may not seem to be the most natural collaborators, but at Legal Council for Health Justice, our advocates work with hospitals and health systems to build healthier people and places. We train clinicians to recognize and respond to patients’ health-harming legal needs. Even the best trained medical professionals don’t know that these issues--such as hunger, unhealthy housing, personal violence, and lack of access to health coverage and public benefits--can have a legal remedy. The Council was originally founded as AIDS Legal Council of Chicago in 1987. In 2014 we merged three legal services programs and expanded our mission to use the power of law to secure dignity, opportunity, and well-being across the lifespan of adults and children facing barriers due to chronic, disabling, and stigmatizing health conditions.

Member Duties : A VISTA will expand LCHJ's capacity to remove legal barriers to health for low-income patients at the agency’s Medical-Legal Partnerships (MLP), which will increase the number of clients enrolled in health insurance, health services, and health benefits programs, as well as increase the number of clients to whom information on health insurance, health care access and health benefits programs is delivered, by approximately 250 over a 12-month period.
