VISTA Retention Specialist – Anti-poverty Services
 
 
 
As a VISTA member at Texas Southmost College you will help disrupt the cycle of poverty in an underserved region by designing a customized anti-poverty initiative. Major functions include assessing the student body’s access to basic needs, conducting learning conversations with community organizations, convening stakeholder meetings to co-create an anti-poverty priority agenda, and recommending an anti-poverty initiative for TSC students. Located at the tip of Texas, adjacent to Mexico and 20 miles from South Padre Island, Texas Southmost College is a medium-sized community college located on the grounds of historic Fort Brown. VISTAs will promote social justice in a bicultural environment while building skills in leadership, project management, and communication. The candidate should possess the following knowledge and skills: strong organizational skills; ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with students, college employees and the public; ability to handle sensitive and extensive confidential data; and the ability to perform and excel in a high-tech all-digital environment.

Member Duties : Working in a bicultural environment on the Texas Gulf Coast region, the VISTA will leverage best practices and build capacity to dramatically reduce the effects of poverty and increase college student retention and completion rates. The VISTA will gather and analyze data specific to local students' basic needs, design a customized anti-poverty initiative, and pursue collaboration opportunities and resources to provide sustainability for implementation.
