Town of Goffstown Community Engagement VISTA

Like many communities in Southern New Hampshire, Goffstown’s population is aging. In 2010 Goffstown’s senior population of 65 or older was 12.8%; In 2017 it is estimated that population has grown to 15.8% (Source 2010 Census & 2013-2017 American Community Survey). Of that population, an estimated 6.4% of senior population is living below the poverty level. A 2016-2017 AARP Age-Friendly Community Assessment identified the need for a senior coordinator to improve social engagement and regular physical activities amongst Goffstown’s senior population. Currently, Town Department’s conduct programs for senior residents, but participation is limited. The Fire Department promotes fall prevention and blood pressure/sugar screenings at the Fire Station, the Police Department provides awareness bulletins about current scam practices, the Parks & Rec Department runs bone builder workout sessions, and the Library has home delivery services for home bound individuals. Additionally, local community organizations provide services to Goffstown’s senior residents. The communication methods for these programs and engaging senior resident on a regular basis can be improved. Also, a careful examination of the needs of Goffstown’s senior residents should be done to ensure they are receiving the programming and services that best meet their needs.

Member Duties : The VISTA member will initially design a senior assessment plan to determine the need of seniors in Goffstown. Working with the Town’s Parks & Recreation Department and the Town Library, the VISTA will examine existing programs serving low-income senior residents. The VISTA will work to expand programs to improve attendance and foster senior engagement. The VISTA will work with Town Departments and community organizations to study programming and services for senior residents, develop a communication strategy that will actively engage and inform senior residents; thereby increasing the use of available resources and promote quality of life amongst the senior population.
