*BMVP - Expand STEAM Programming for Youth

Billings Public Library strives to be a place of exploration, education, and inclusiveness that provides entertainment, research resources, music, computer technology, digitization services, and educational opportunities for our community. A key part of this mission is to improve high school graduation rates and increase academic interest and achievement for the youth served in the lab. Billings has seen a rise in graduation in the past five years, and the TECH Lab is committed to working to maintain this progress in our community. However, low-income and American Indian youth are still struggling with their graduation rates when compared to their peer demographic groups. This project will work to target American Indian and low-income, at-risk youth in order to stir and maintain academic interest and academic potential, and help improve individual self-esteem through STEAM based programming and outreach. By cultivating a safe space to explore STEAM topics and work on social skills, the TECH Lab will allow at-risk youth to become confident in their personalities and abilities. These opportunities have been shown to lead to personal and academic achievement and thus an increase in graduation rates. Students with increased engagement in STEAM activities within the lab will ideally go on to study STEAM topics in college and enter a professional field in a STEAM career. This project will create a structure that will help youth achieve these goals now and in the future. The overall goal of this project is to expand STEAM programming within the TECH Lab to support students and improve their academic engagement. This effort will encouraging low-income youth to engage in STEAM opportunities and increase academic and life skills, leading to future economic stability.
