ConnectHome VISTA 2020: Jersey City

The ConnectHome VISTA program, facilitated by Serve New York, collaborates with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to close the digital divide, and extend affordable internet access to low-income families throughout the nation. AmeriCorps VISTA members working with ConnectHome build capacity in organizations, government agencies, and institutions focusing on expanding educational opportunities and ensuring economic opportunity. Members work behind-the-scenes at organizations to build capacity, create sustainability, and indirectly serve the organization and their clients. Typical VISTA responsibilities include: grant writing, community outreach, fund development, curriculum building, creating partnerships, program development and execution. While serving, members receive support from the VISTA team at The Service Collaborative of WNY, Inc. The support includes monthly training, a social network of fellow members, and daily support from VISTA leaders.

Member Duties : The Jersey City Housing Authority is the state’s second largest public housing authority, serving over 18,000 residents. Our goals for this year are: 1) expand programs we have Implemented successfully and build upon existing partnerships; 2) conduct research, administer additional surveys, and analyze data related to providing digital access across our communities; and 3) develop new partnerships to establish additional programs and opportunities for residents. The VISTA would work individually and in collaboration with JCHA's social service team to leverage existing partnerships/resources, develop new ones, research and explore free and low-cost connectivity/technology vendors, seek out and apply for grants to support an array of related initiatives, assess the impact of existing programs, and design/implement new digital literacy programs. The VISTA will help develop innovative ways to design and implement programming that has the ability to be consistent and self-sustaining.
