Adapted Sports and Recreation Specialist VISTA

The VISTA volunteer will serve people with disabilities who live in Sioux City or in the surrounding communities by helping to build our local capacity for offering adapted and inclusive recreation programming. The position will complete an asset base mapping project to determine programming needs, seek funding, build partnerships, establish a volunteer base, develop, implement, and evaluate adapted recreation and sports programs as well as promote programming via social media and other traditional methods. By providing affordable adapted sports and recreation programs for people with disabilities, who are often living in poverty, we can provide safe physical activity opportunities which will improve their health and quality of life. According to the CDC, over one in five Iowans, nearly 19,000 Sioux City residents, has a disability and people with disabilities are three times more likely to have chronic health conditions like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, or cancer. This is due to the fact that people with disabilities are more likely to be obese, smoke, have high blood pressure and be inactive. It is also known that people with disabilities live in poverty at more than twice the rate of people without disabilities. The City of Sioux City would like to address this issue to by offering affordable inclusive and adapted recreation programs.
