Stewards VISTA: Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area/UNA
The Tennessee River is the dominant feature on the landscape of the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area. Many residents don’t understand the important role the river plays in the ecology and economy of the region. Like much of Alabama, the MSNHA struggles with problems related to poverty, including low rates of higher education, pollution, and poorly funded school systems. Educating residents, young and old, about the value of the river, engaging them in recreational activities on the river, and teaching them how important the river’s health is for our community will help to create a more engaged citizenry, which is a big first step to fighting poverty in our community.
