ConnectHome VISTA 2020: San Joaquin

The ConnectHome VISTA program, facilitated by Serve New York, collaborates with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to close the digital divide, and extend affordable internet access to low-income families throughout the nation. AmeriCorps VISTA members working with ConnectHome build capacity in organizations, government agencies, and institutions focusing on expanding educational opportunities and ensuring economic opportunity. Members work behind-the-scenes at organizations to build capacity, create sustainability, and indirectly serve the organization and their clients. Typical VISTA responsibilities include: grant writing, community outreach, fund development, curriculum building, creating partnerships, program development and execution. While serving, members receive support from the VISTA team at The Service Collaborative of WNY, Inc. The support includes monthly training, a social network of fellow members, and daily support from VISTA leaders.

Member Duties : The Housing Authority of San Joaquin aims to narrow the digital divide by increasing the number of HUD-Assisted individuals and families that are computer literate and have in-home internet access. The Housing Authority currently provides digital literacy programs to youth at two Public Housing sites, with the goal to expand the reach of these programs to all public housing sites, and to offer the opportunities to its adult residents. The VISTA will work on projects that increase knowledge and access to digital resources and opportunities for all HUD-assisted residents. The VISTA will develop program materials, apply for grants for digital literacy programs, engage agencies to administer the programs, and recruit volunteers to facilitate the classes. The VISTA will also be researching and applying for funding to bring Broadband connections into the homes of Housing Authority residents.
