A post-secondary education has been shown to give upward economic mobility to those that attain it. A person with a college degree has a 3.5 times lower poverty rate than a person with a high school diploma. Of the total students enrolled in public school in Montana, 19.3% of families live in poverty and 41.40% qualify for the free and reduced lunch programs. In Montana 44.7% of adults have a post-secondary high quality certificate or higher which is below the national percentage of 47.6%. MCAN’s vision is that 60% of Montanans will have completed a post-secondary program by 2025. Montana College Access Network (MCAN) will help facilitate a shift toward a college-going culture, so that all Montanans believe that postsecondary education is necessary, worth the investment, and possible for every student. Our vision is for all Montana students to believe in their capacity to achieve the goals they have set for their lives, with education at all levels providing the cornerstones of these dreams. In order to achieve this vision, MCAN members will continue to work together to help Montana’s students understand the myriad postsecondary education opportunities available to them, including (but not limited to) two-year and four-year programs, workforce training and education, and graduate/professional degrees. In addition, we will continue to collaborate to help students access financial resources to make postsecondary education affordable for all Montanans. Fulfilling our vision will result in an educated Montana workforce ready to meet the opportunities of the future. Building a college-going culture in Montana will strengthen both state and local economies, demonstrate to businesses interested in investing in Montana that education is valued here, and develop generational prosperity.

Member Duties : In previous assessments in Montana there was a lack of knowledge of programs available for students for college access, especially with high school counselors. Work needs to be done to ensure that everyone knows about these programs. The VISTA for Montana College Access Network (MCAN) will further our mission to support, serve, and enhance our affiliate members in their efforts to increase post-secondary participation and completion for all Montanans. The VISTA will do this by designing and managing a membership campaign and seeking out and assisting with potential grant funding opportunities. Specifically, The VISTA will assist in identifying and engaging entities in the area who work with children as potential coalition members; identifying potential funding sources for the coalitions work, and assist coalition founders with establishment work such as mission statements and strategic plans.
