Community Outreach - Teen Pregnancy Prevention

To ensure the residents of Val Verde County receive the educational, social and emotional support they need to break the cycle of poverty, the AmeriCorps VISTA project will build the capacity of Val Verde Regional Medical Center (VVRMC) to provide community outreach programs that focus on teen pregnancy prevention. The VISTA volunteer will work to strengthen or establish new partnerships with other, similarly focused community organizations to develop a collaborative approach in which resources can be leveraged between organizations. They will also work to identify untapped audiences that would benefit from this education. By the end of their service year, the VISTA volunteer will: 1. Develop a community coalition focused on teen pregnancy prevention. 2. Conduct a community health needs assessment to understand the current landscape of teen pregnancy in Val Verde County, gaps in services/resources, and opportunities for development. 3. Collaborate with the VVRMC Community Health Educator (CHE) to expand education curriculum, conduct community outreach events, recruit participants for the small group sessions and develop educational materials for distribution. 4. Build the capacity of VVRMC by identifying funding streams to sustain the teen pregnancy prevention programming offered to the community.
