Community Outreach - Cancer & Diabetes Prevention

To ensure the residents of Val Verde County receive the educational, social and emotional support they need to break the cycle of poverty, the AmeriCorps VISTA project will build the capacity of Val Verde Regional Medical Center (VVRMC) to provide community outreach programs that focus on cancer prevention and diabetes/obesity prevention. VISTA volunteers will work to strengthen or establish new partnerships with other, similarly focused community organizations to develop a collaborative approach in which resources can be leveraged between organizations. They will also work to identify untapped audiences that would benefit from this education. By the end of their service year, the VISTA volunteer will: 1. Develop two community coalitions, one focused on diabetes/nutrition education and prevention, and the other focused on cancer education and prevention. 2. Conduct a community health needs assessment to understand current landscape of cancer and diabetes in Val Verde County, gaps in services/resources, and opportunities for development. 3. Create outreach education programs for cancer and diabetes prevention and develop educational materials for distribution via direct outreach or social media campaigns. The VISTA volunteer will also work to build the capacity of the HOPE Cancer Resource Room to develop and sustain a volunteer program, fundraising program, and ongoing support group program. By the end of their service year, the VISTA volunteer will: 1. Research the history of volunteerism in the HCRR and develop a sustainable volunteer program, including a recruitment and retention plan, and other policies and procedures. 2. Assess the current fundraising/donation program in the HCRR and develop a donor recruitment strategy and fundraising plan. 3. Research successful models of support groups offered in similar settings and create a new plan for developing ongoing support groups for cancer patients.
