BMVP - Create Learning Opportunities for Disabled Students

Studies show that cognitive development and young children’s IQs are associated with the family’s ability to provide intellectually stimulating experiences. When the family’s priority is survival, less cognitive stimulation (both academic and language) is provided to the children in the family. When children have a disability and also live in poverty, the impact of poverty may be more significant. In a survey between families with and without a member that has a disability, “half of participants with mobility disabilities (47.5%) reported a lack of money as a constraint, and more than a quarter of participants with mobility disabilities (27.7%) reported a lack of companions as a constraint.” When poverty, compounds with the rate of disability, which between 2013 and 2017 Billings estimated at 9.1%, youth activities and cognitive development are the last investment with a lasting impact. Eagle Mount provides low cost stimulating adaptive recreation experiences for youth with disabilities. By crossing perceived limitations youth gain confidence and a willingness to engage in their own education, increasing cognitive development and leading to the quest for meaningful employment and out of poverty. Eagle Mount is dedicated to enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities through recreation and create opportunities for participants to “Embrace Life without Limits”.

Member Duties : The overall goal of this project is to increase academic engagement by expanding outdoor adaptive recreation opportunities to low income students with disabilities. This will require a community assessment, the generation of $5,000 to support the new program, and community awareness and engagement. This project will alleviate poverty by increasing access to inclusive outdoor excursion activities that will increase cognitive stimulation and produce higher levels of academic engagement in low income youth with disabilities, thus ensuring a higher chance of success in educational achievement and future job prospects to break the cycle of poverty.
