GARNA Sustainability Outreach Coordinator VISTA

GARNA inspires a conservation ethic by providing educational opportunities and experiences so that those who live, work and play in the Upper Arkansas Valley are motivated to take care of resources and leave a legacy of responsible use of the environment. Chaffee Green Sustainability Program of GARNA addresses sustainable materials management issues within Chaffee County, Colorado. A 23-year old environmental non-profit, GARNA is the area’s established nature association, and the go-to education and outreach partner for public land management agencies in the region. In addition, GARNA’s tagline is Nature centered. Community driven. This represents the heart and soul of GARNA, where community resilience, including poverty alleviation, leads to environmental resilience. Chaffee County is a fantastic place to spend a VISTA year! The area offers abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation, nature viewing, arts and culture. The local CO state park offers whitewater boating and gold-medal fishing, and the valley is surrounded by the Sangre de Cristo and Saguache Mountain ranges, which has 15 of Colorado’s 14-thousand foot peaks. The SOC will assist GARNA by networking with renewable energy volunteers, increasing awareness of resources by promoting existing programs and encouraging development of new opportunities; partnering with county, municipal and nonprofit efforts for clean air/water; partnering with those addressing climate change and carbon reduction; and working with area-wide efforts to include sustainability in the county’s Comprehensive Plan. The SOC will develop, plan, and implement projects that engage volunteers and businesses in practices reducing plastic consumption through education and reusable bag programs, materials management at large-scale tourism-based events, restaurant and back-yard composting, and working with local government officials to include sustainable materials management in short and long-range planning efforts.
