Maker Install Coordinator

Transmit Receive (TXRX) Labs began offering classes focused on engineering and manufacturing technology to the community 15 years ago, offering workshops in woodworking, welding and machining as well as modern manufacturing modalities such as 3D printing, laser cutting, and other CNC machines. We have become a thriving makerspace with a robust education department, TXRX Edu. TXRX Edu includes 3 major initiatives: Maker to Inventor, Teach TXRX, and Maker Install. Maker to Inventor (M2I) is our four year, on-site after-school program that provides freshmen and sophomores foundational maker training and juniors and seniors three advanced training tracks to choose from: Engineer, Fabricator, and Entrepreneur. M2I allows TXRX to test new curriculum and add new skill training. Teach TXRX is a professional development program that helps teachers learn craft and technology based maker skills and supports implementation of maker-based learning in the classroom. Maker Install is our scalable K-12 education program that supports the addition of makerspaces and maker-based education in schools. The Maker Install program is not just the acquisition of equipment, it is the installation of a maker culture and consciousness. Each Maker Install begins with a year-long assessment of the strengths and challenges at each school, the resources and needs of the community, and the formation of partnerships with local stakeholders. Therefore, each Maker Install is customized to the school, its students, teachers, and neighborhood. Use of the makerspace is supported by co-development of curriculum with teachers by TXRX staff and VISTA members, maintenance of machines, and acquisition of materials. Seed funding supports the Maker Install for the first two years, but the goal is for the makerspace to be sustained by trained student and community volunteers, fundraising campaigns, and outside funding gained through outreach and events promoting the makerspace.

Member Duties : The VISTA member's main responsibility will be to develop the Makerspace management and funding plan that will help transition it to sustainability after the VISTA member's service ends. Management starts with the continued development of teacher use of the space, including the co-development of maker-based curriculum for in-school use of the space with teachers and TXRX Labs technicians. VISTA members will also support after-school use by clubs and specialized maker-based programming. VISTA members will manage a skill-based badge system that teachers and students can earn through both in-school and after-school activities. These activities can be supported by community volunteers, especially parents, and VISTA members will recruit, manage, and develop a system of volunteerism. The makerspace, its support of in-school and out-of-school education, and the opportunities for community members to participate will be promoted through two annual events organized by VISTA members.
