Mesa County Public Health Youth Engagement Associate VISTA
Mesa County Public Health’s mission is to maintain and improve health through assessment of community health status, policy development to support effective programs, and assurance of high quality, effective education and service. MCPH prioritizes poverty reduction as critical to the health of a community, while recognizing that the challenges of poverty are systemic and require a broadly based response. We facilitate a number of community coalitions, such as the opioid response, suicide prevention, and youth substance abuse prevention. We also act as the backbone for innovative projects like the Community Transformation initiative, which works to improve health outcomes by building stronger social capital and civic engagement in high-poverty neighborhoods. Optimal health and well-being for all members of our community is our highest goal, yet we recognize that youth voice is underrepresented in MCPH. The Youth Engagement Coordinator VISTA will be tasked with building our capacity to improve youth involvement in internal programs and in our community partnerships. Grand Junction is the largest city on Colorado's Western Slope and is perfect for anyone who loves the outdoors. Grand Junction is next to the Colorado National Monument with views of red rock canyons and the Grand Mesa, a flat top mountain that is home to Powderhorn Mountain Resort. The Grand Valley is known for its outdoor recreation activities like mountain biking, rafting, skiing and camping. MCPH offers a unique work experience that goes beyond traditional public health responsibilities. MCPH realizes that working across sectors to improve living conditions such as food security, safe neighborhoods, and community connectedness are important in determining the health of a community. This makes MCPH an excellent training ground for individuals interested in physical and behavioral health, social work, data analysis, marketing, and other skill sets that contribute to community change.
