Stewards VISTA: CCCN - Gary IN

The Cities Connecting Children in Nature will help bridge the gap between children living in poverty and the world’s most valuable resource, the environment. The Stewards VISTA will help to develop a program that that connects economic opportunities with conservation of our natural resources by leveraging the program’s three main components: green career exposure, design of natural spaces with youth and activating parks through youth and family engagement. Green Career Exposure: The Stewards Americorps VISTA will coordinate with our city’s local job training partners including, (but not limited to) Jobs for Americas Graduates, Indiana Career Connect, US Forestry Service and Groundwork USA to develop a quality program that teaches young adults work ready skills in environmental jobs. Design Natural Spaces: The Stewards Americorps VISTA will convene traditional and non-traditional partners to assist children with the design and (in some cases) redesign of Gary’s natural areas. Working with the City of Gary Parks Department, Shirley Hines Land Trust, Thea Bowman Schools, our VISTA will research issues with ownership, preservation and land use to make natural areas more useful and inviting to the City’s youngest residents.
