VISTA Volunteer Program Coordinator - Sharing Life
Sharing Life Community Outreach (SLCO) was founded in 1999 as a small food pantry and staffed by one woman. In 2016, the agency became the first pilot HUB for the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB). We serve over 100 families on-site daily and distribute to smaller food pantries that impacted over 200,000 clients in 2018 across 31 zip codes. In addition to offering a client choice food pantry, SLCO provides clothing, furniture, durable medical equipment, financial capability training, emergency utility assistance, a school break backpack feeding program, back to school program, a senior citizen holiday gathering, People and Nutrition (PAN) supplemental food assistance program for senior citizens, extra holiday food and an annual Christmas Faire that provided toys to over 1200 children in 2018. Our partnerships are many and strong. For example, we partner with El Centro Community College to provide 5 healthcare pathway classes to our clients who apply and are accepted. In 2017, we became a VITA site for the Internal Revenue Service in order to provide no-cost income tax filing assistance and assisted in preparing over 400 tax returns in 2019. On-site SNAP caseworkers assist people in applying for food stamps. The incidence of high school student homelessness is growing in our area and we partner with our local school district by providing food for students who are experiencing homelessness. Through partnerships with utility companies, we provide assistance with electric, gas, and water bills in excess of $400,000. SLCO maintains a staff of 18 paid employees and approximately 250 volunteers. Daily operations require at least 25 volunteers, and our goal is to increase participation, surpassing that minimum. Volunteers are used in all aspects of the agency, and there are several who have been volunteering within our organization since its inception. As is the case with most non-profits, recruiting and retaining volunteers is of paramount importance to the agency overall.

Member Duties : To help ensure families experiencing poverty receive effective and efficient services, the VISTA member will restructure the current volunteer program at Sharing Life. The ratio of volunteers to staff at Sharing Life is approximately 17:1 and, as our agency has grown, it is imperative that the volunteer program, including community, court-ordered, service learning and client volunteers be reorganized and streamlined in order to manage the growth in our clients and our programs. Each day, our desire is to make certain our clients are treated with compassion and our goal is to make certain they spend as little time as possible waiting for the service they need. To achieve these goals, it is an agency priority that our volunteer program be upgraded and expanded.
