'20-'21 Emergency Preparedness & Response Program VISTA

When a disaster and or public health emergency happens, it’s critical that Thurston County Public Health & Social Services Department and Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is prepared to respond quickly to protect Thurston County residents from potential health hazards. The Department must continually plan to anticipate, detect, access, and understand the health risks and impacts of an emergency on the community and residents, particularly its most vulnerable populations. The Emergency Preparedness and Response program is responsible for a countywide Emergency Operations Plan that outlines response coordination for all types of public health emergencies. The plan also defines roles and responsibilities of volunteers, mitigation efforts, response, and recovery operations. The VISTA member will work with the Emergency Preparedness and Response team to review, update, and build capacity for these capabilities. By addressing this need, the Thurston County MRC and Thurston County Emergency Operations Plan will be greatly enhanced. The program serves individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness and financial burdens in accessing healthcare, such as immunizations. Increasing the number of clients able to be served will help prevent illness, which have an additional negative impact on those experiencing poverty. This VISTA project is designed to increase the Thurston County Public Health & Social Services and MRC capacity to serve vulnerable populations in emergency preparedness and resilience building by supporting community outreach, building partnerships with stakeholders, and reducing the impacts of poverty on disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. As a result, the VISTA member will alleviate poverty for more individuals in our community.

Member Duties : The VISTA will build capacity for Thurston County Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) by recruiting volunteers and improving retention through engagement, development and revision of a volunteer training plan and community activities, increasing the number of clients who are able to be served as a result. This will expand access to care for people experiencing poverty, homelessness and burdens in accessing healthcare and help prevent illness, lessening the negative impact of illness and barriers to care and allow people to be healthier, miss less work & school and be more resilient. The VISTA will also support development of the department’s access and functional needs plan to serve vulnerable populations, reducing the impacts of poverty in the event of an emergency or disaster. The VISTA will allow the MRC to better serve our low-income and vulnerable communities both in our daily operations and in response efforts by meeting populations experiencing poverty where they are, reducing barriers.
