Disaster Resiliency VISTA for Southwest Missouri

Applications will be evaluated on a rolling basis. Please feel free to reach out directly to the program contact listed. This project will develop a structured process of outreach for disaster recovery and resilience for communities in the Southwest Missouri Council of Governments region. The VISTA will communicate with and collect information from various state/federal agencies that may provide financial and/or technical assistance to local governments and business communities. Over the course of the service, the VISTA will also help guide other planning efforts in identifying opportunities to build resilience in frequently affected communities and may assist in seeking funding for local communities. This project is sponsored by the Denver Regional Office (DRO) of the Economic Development Administration (EDA), and will be directly supervised by staff at the Southwest Missouri Council of Governments in Springfield, Missouri. The overall EDA Mission is “to lead the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competitiveness, preparing American regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy”.

Member Duties : The VISTA will have an overall focus on increasing information pertaining to disaster recovery and resilience which may be integrated into numerous ongoing efforts. The VISTA will familiarize themselves with the Missouri Disaster Recovery Framework (MDRF) and existing local government disaster processes. They will document previous damages and assist emergency managers and other staff throughout the region as disasters occur to gain hands-on experience in preliminary damage assessment and issues with the documentation process. The VISTA will create a formalized process that fits with the MDRF for outreach during and immediately following a disaster event and assist communities in building capacity for completing preliminary damage assessments, both for residents and businesses. They will then develop training materials for various stakeholder groups.
