Appalachian SCPVP: Safe Baby Court Community Outreach VISTA

The South Cumberland Plateau AmeriCorps VISTA Project operates on the beautiful South Cumberland Plateau in the central Appalachian region of Tennessee. Our program includes 16 AmeriCorps VISTAs supported by two management staff. VISTAs serve to alleviate poverty by building capacity within community organizations that address issues of health, education, and economic development. Our VISTAs act in a variety of capacities including grant writing, fundraising, curriculum development, community organizing, and volunteer recruitment. Each of our positions offers the unique opportunity to serve in a rural, economically depressed region of Tennessee and make a true impact on a community in need. Through our sponsors, the University of the South (Sewanee) and South Cumberland Community Fund, our VISTA program offers a number of unique benefits and amenities. These include personal and professional development and on-going mentoring from an experienced management team. Additionally, VISTAs receive invitations to University seminars, discounted meals at the University’s dining hall and full access to the university recreation center and library. Make a difference! Help us improve our South Cumberland Plateau communities.

Member Duties : Grundy County's Safe Baby Court helps ensure that children of incarcerated parents receive the educational, social, and emotional support they need to help them break the cycle of poverty. The Grundy Safe Baby Court Team VISTA will build the capacity of the GSBCT by developing a sustainable volunteer recruitment and management system for its mentoring program. The VISTA will assess the current state of GSBCT’ efforts in reaching, selecting, and supporting volunteer mentors and create or revise policies, procedures, and documents to improve the effectiveness and sustainability of the mentor recruitment and matching system.
