RICJ Youth Empowerment VISTA

The mission of Rhode Island for Community & Justice (RICJ) is to fight bias, bigotry and racism and build understanding and respect among all races, religions and cultures. We run programs in juvenile justice, civil rights, diversity education and youth leadership. Location: 271 North Main St near downtown Providence, RI (free parking onsite; on bus line), an exciting, arts oriented community. Our youth programs prepare teens as inclusive leaders. Project RESPECT is a one-week residential leadership camp for 25-35 youth ages 14-17. Youth Facilitating for Change (YFC) is a workforce program hiring youth halftime in summer to learn dialogue facilitation and conduct workshops on social justice for peers and community. Youth Action Council (YAC) is a youth-led after school program that puts leadership skills into practice through community service. The programs prepare diverse RI teens as leaders and address issues faced by low income neighborhoods and communities of color. The program shows success with nearly all core youth remaining in school, graduating, and going on to college or job training. The Youth Empowerment VISTA's work will help disrupt the generational cycle of poverty for urban youth of color we serve. You will recruit youth, organize and improve the programs and learning curricula, monitor youths' progress and document and "showcase" their achievements, market and help raise support to sustain the programs, expand networks through community outreach, and help build an intentional, bonded community for youth. We seek a VISTA dedicated to youth empowerment. You are organized, collaborative, take initiative and are excited to outreach to schools, nonprofits, alumni, parents, and anyone else who can support our teens. Earliest start date is Oct 1, 2019 to Sept 30, 2020. Contact Toby Ayers, PhD, Executive Director at toby@ricj.org for information and visit www.ricj.org
