Stewards VISTA: Jersey City

The Project Green Time initiative seeks to provide the children of Jersey City with equitable access to nature. As a large, urban community, the residents of Jersey City face socioeconomic barriers prohibiting children’s ability to access the outdoors on a regular basis. As led by Jersey City’s Office of Innovation, this project will work with community stakeholders and the Jersey City Board of Education in order to implement programming that remedies this critical issue. As part of this project, one elementary school within the Jersey City Public School District will transform a space into a green schoolyard, which in turn will be supported by newly designed curriculum teaching and encouraging students to interact with the natural environment. The first school chosen will be a pilot program for a larger, future green schoolyard initiative. Parallel to the educational aspect of this project, the Office of Innovation will engage with the community in order to determine neighborhood specific issues that are responsible for children’s lack of time spent outdoors. Jersey City’s green network will also be assessed as part of this effort in order to identify specific areas within the community where outdoor, natural space is lacking. New and expanded community programming will be designed and implemented in order to mitigate location specific barriers.
