Feeding Florida Advocacy + Communications Associate

Feeding Florida, a network of 12 member food banks and over 2300 partner agencies, is seeking VISTA Members to help alleviate hunger, address poverty, and create healthy futures throughout Florida. Currently Feeding America estimates that 2.8 million residents in Florida are food insecure or 1 in 6 Floridians do not know where their next meal will come from and of those 800,000 are children. There is a significant need to address food access, especially with it's immediate relation to poverty. With a year round growing season and once of the largest agricultural industries in the United States, Florida has an abundance of food. Here, healthy and fresh food should not be difficult to access throughout the state, and yet for many, it is. Concurrently we see lack of access to healthy food linked to obesity and illnesses like diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Feeding Florida has found that food access and food insecurity in Florida is not a supply issue but a distribution issue. Feeding Florida's mission aims to to mobilize resources and advocate through a network of Florida food banks that are affiliated with Feeding America to promote resiliency, food access, and improved well-being. Through research, innovative programs, disaster relief, and advocacy work, Feeding Florida is the leading statewide voice in the state on fighting hunger and food insecurity. Ultimately, Feeding Florida's goal is to create a healthier interconnected food system that sustainably feeds all of Florida.
