Stewards VISTA: Virgin Islands National Park

A strong sense of community pride for the preservation of natural and cultural resources in Virgin Islands National Park will created pathways for dynamic learning among Virgin Island youth and their families, and help better prepare individuals in our community to be stewards of their environment and protectors of those natural and cultural resources in good times, and bad. The Friends and VINP have opportunities and resources available to connect local youth and adults with the park. This project will focus on maximizing the potential benefits of those opportunities for the local community, with an assessment of what is currently being offered, its value to the local community. After the devastation caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria, the growing need for inclusion, and the growing disparity gap, are apparent on St. John. The result is that our most vulnerable families continue to be the most negatively affected by the dramatic shift in the island’s landscape; new construction continues to be driven by business opportunities, often envisioned from the mainland, and there is an obvious lack of attention being given to reestablishing public recreation spaces, playgrounds, ball fields and school spaces. Park land is in disrepair and the Friends is involved in fundraising to rehab each site. The rebuild of these public spaces and the engagement of local community members and youth are vital throughout the process, and after completion, have the potential to restore some faith in the park, connect youth with their park, and help support local groups that serve youth. Developing a community outreach and inclusion plan to specifically ensure that the launch of the two public spaces is done with an explicit mission to serve our most vulnerable and under-represented (under-served youth and their families) will be extremely important. This will include designing existing outreach activities and programs of the Friends and the park to help meet this mission.

Member Duties : Through the "Our Park, Our Island, My Home" Project the Friends of VINP aims to re-imagine the way that we connect Virgin Island youth and their families with Virgin Islands National Park (VINP). The Friends and VINP have a myriad of opportunities and resources available to use to connect local youth and adults with their park. This project will focus on maximizing the potential benefits of those opportunities for the local community to: - Create pathways for rich and meaningful learning opportunities specifically for VI youth and their families in VINP - Build knowledge and appreciation for the protection and preservation work of VINP (including sharing career options) - Better prepare individuals in our community to be stewards of their environment and protectors of the island's natural and cultural resources in good times, and bad (post-hurricane, fiscal depressions).
