Community Equity Outreach Specialist
 
 
 
This position is offered through the City and County of Honolulu ("City") AmeriCorps VISTA Program with support from the Corporation for National and Community Service. The mission of this program is to 1) address poverty, 2) build capacity, 3) empower communities, and 4) increase economic, social, and environmental resiliency across Oahu. Serving with the City Office of Climate Change, Sustainability and Resiliency ("Resilience Office"), this full-time VISTA position will play a key role ensuring City policies and programs build long-term equity for communities island-wide and address the needs of O'ahu's most vulnerable residents. This VISTA build the capacity of the Resilience Office to identify community priorities, facilitate climate resilience discussions, and create tools for both community members and the City to assess climate risks and equity impacts. The ideal candidate for this position will interest and demonstrated experience in community engagement with strong communication skills; demonstrate knowledge in climate change impacts particularly for island communities; and have a deep commitment to equity and climate resilience on O'ahu. This year-long position begins August 5, 2019 and is based in Honolulu, Hawai'i.

Member Duties : The Community Equity Outreach Specialist VISTA will focus on assessing equity impacts of City policies and engaging communities in climate resilience discussions. Specific activities include: (1) Identify and build partnerships with community organizations to better align resilience goals with community priorities; (2) Create content and outreach material that translates climate resilience for vulnerable populations; (3) Facilitate community-based conversations on the relationships between climate resilience, sustainability, native culture, and equity; (4) Conduct research on existing strategies and best practices for building inclusivity into City programs and empowering communities; (5) Develop action plans to identify and implement next steps for progressing on key community cohesion initiatives as outlined in the City's Resilience Strategy; and (6) Represent the Resilience Office at community and stakeholder meetings, events, and other outreach opportunities throughout O'ahu.
