Climate Equity Program Specialist VISTA
 
 
 
The City and County of Honolulu's ("City") AmeriCorps VISTA Program was established in 2018 to strengthen the City government's efforts to increase community resilience across the island of O'ahu, Hawai'i. The City VISTA Program embeds VISTA Members in multiple City departments to enhance the capacity of the various departments to respond to the challenges of shocks and stressors like high costs of living, natural disasters, and climate change. In alignment with the VISTA program's mission, City VISTA Members strive to build capacity, create sustainable solutions, empower communities, and alleviate poverty. The Climate Equity Program Specialist VISTA position serves with the City's Office of Climate Change, Sustainability and Resiliency ("Resilience Office"). The Resilience Office coordinates initiatives across City departments to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change and integrate sustainable values into City plans, programs, and policies. This full-time VISTA position will play a key role in ensuring the City's climate and sustainability initiatives prioritize racial and social equity and the needs of O'ahu's frontline residents. The goal of this VISTA project is to enhance and institutionalize existing tools, data, and resources to normalize equity-centered processes, programs, and initiatives. The ideal candidate for this position will have strong communication and engagement skills; demonstrate knowledge in climate change impacts particularly for island communities; and have a deep commitment to equity and climate resilience on O'ahu. This year-long position begins August 29, 2022 and is based in on the island of O'ahu in Honolulu, Hawai'i. All candidates must meet the City and County of Honolulu’s COVID-19 vaccination mandate requirements prior to service.

Member Duties : The Climate Equity Program Specialist VISTA position aims to enhance and institutionalize existing tools, trainings, and systems that increase the capacity of staff and community to center equity in the development and implementation of climate resilience initiatives. Specific activities include: (1) Conduct research on existing strategies and best practices to alleviate poverty while building inclusivity into City programs and supporting communities to engage in building island-wide climate resilience. (2) Improve functionality, accessibility, and use of existing data and databases for equity information and partnerships. (3) Develop resources and trainings for increasing engagement with and utilization of key equity tools, including the Equitable Community Engagement Guide, Equity Index, and Equity Check-in Form. (4) Build partnerships with community organizations to align City resilience goals with community priorities.
