ConnectHome VISTA 2019: San Joaquin

The ConnectHome VISTA program, facilitated by Serve New York, collaborates with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to close the digital divide, and extend affordable internet access to low-income families throughout the nation. AmeriCorps VISTA members working with ConnectHome build capacity in organizations, government agencies, and institutions focusing on expanding educational opportunities and ensuring economic opportunity. Members work behind-the-scenes at organizations to build capacity, create sustainability, and indirectly serve the organization and their clients. Typical VISTA responsibilities include: grant writing, community outreach, fund development, curriculum building, creating partnerships, program development and execution. While serving, members receive support from the VISTA team at The Service Collaborative of WNY, Inc. The support includes monthly training, a social network of fellow members, and daily support from VISTA leaders.

Member Duties : The VISTA will apply for grants to fund digital literacy programs, develop program materials, recruit agencies to administer the programs, and recruit volunteers/teachers to facilitate the classes. In addition, the VISTA will be researching and applying for grants to bring Broadband connections into the homes of Housing Authority residents. The Housing Authority aims to narrow the digital divide by increasing the number of HUD-assisted individuals and families that are computer literate and have in-home internet access. The proposed VISTA project aligns with the education priority area, which will allow HUD-assisted residents in San Joaquin County the opportunity to both learn and have access to opportunities and resources they would not have otherwise. The Housing Authority currently provides digital literacy programs to youth at two Public Housing sites. The Housing Authority would like to expand these programs to all Public Housing sites and expand the opportunities to adults.
