Field Operations VISTA (North)

Communities In Schools of Mid-America is an affiliate of the national non-profit, Communities In Schools (CIS). CIS is the nation’s largest and most effective dropout prevention organization, operating in more than 2,400 schools in the most challenged communities of 25 states and the District of Columbia. Based directly inside schools throughout the country, Communities In Schools connects students and their families to basic and critical educational and community-based resources, tailored to each student’s specific needs. Communities In Schools of Mid-America currently provides services in schools in four states and serves more than 43,000 young people, providing case-managed services to more than 3,700 students. CIS of Mid-America has a proven track record of improving student outcomes in academic achievement and behavior patterns. Students participating in CIS of Mid-America projects have increased promotion and graduation rates, improved attendance, improved academic performance, and have fewer discipline referrals. The AmeriCorps VISTA members at CIS of Mid-America will have many opportunities to gain skills involved with non-profit management and the needs of at-risk youth. Members will support program research and development that will directly benefit the students that the organization serves. Members will help tell the organization’s story through data evaluation and community engagement, make programs thrive through research and volunteer recruitment and management, and find ways to make the organization fiscally sound through grant research and supporting donor relations. Members look to gain valuable knowledge and experience in non-profit management.
