AmeriCorps St. Louis - Education - Tutor

Change your world, change your life! Spend a year teaching children how to read alongside 40 other young people making real change in the lives of children. Members of our Corps come from across the nation to serve in the St. Louis Public Schools as tutors and mentors. Members serve in 9 schools providing intensive one-on-one tutoring and mentoring, with a particular emphasis on literacy and language arts. During extended day programming, Members provide a safe and engaging place for children, assisting students with homework completion, providing additional academic enrichment opportunities, and designing structured recreation for students. In one of our nation's struggling school districts, AmeriCorps St. Louis Members are making tangible differences in the lives of children who might otherwise fall through the cracks. We also have a strong Member development component. In addition to regular program-sponsored gatherings, Members are offered other evening and weekend service opportunities that develop leadership and project planning skills. Now in its 18th year, AmeriCorps St. Louis has a proven history of providing highly successful programs, partnerships, and trainings, making it a model to other programs around the state and country. We operate in conjunction with the AmeriCorps St. Louis Emergency Response Team and all together have 80 Members who come from all over the country to create our tightly knit community. Join us in September 2012 and change your world and even your life.

Member Duties : Our Members are placed in schools in October, and receive extensive training in the 3 weeks prior to placement. Members continue to attend training days twice per month throughout their service, which extends until the end of July, when summer programming ends. Each AmeriCorps St. Louis tutor is trained in methods of literacy tutoring; strategies to increase personal responsibility and citizenship among students; serving in a diverse, urban school environment; and honing their own leadership skills. Members serve full-time at their school site in teams of 4-5 Members, with an AmeriCorps Team Leader at each site. In a typical day, a Member tutors 3-4 students one-on-one, assists in the classroom, plans tutoring lessons and all school events, and facilitates after-school activities.
