R.O.C.K. Mat-Su Common Roots: Youth Leadership Council

R.O.C.K. Mat-Su (Raising Our Children With Kindness) is a place-based collective impact initiative consisting of individuals and organizations that joined together in 2014 to promote family resilience and reduce child maltreatment in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough (Mat-Su) in Southcentral Alaska. R.O.C.K. Mat-Su focuses on two goals: 1) strengthen families so all children are safe, healthy, and thriving; and 2) end child abuse and neglect and reduce Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). To achieve the dual goals, R.O.C.K. Mat-Su is implementing multiple strategies that span the public health prevention spectrum. A few of our primary prevention activities include: • Hosting family dance parties in community spaces to foster strong social support for parents. • Increasing the communities’ awareness and understanding of Adverse Childhood Experiences & Trauma Sensitive Practices and their impact on child development through free community presentations. • Providing free trainings on Child Sexual Abuse Prevention for local organizations, individuals, and community groups. • Developing a 2-day workshop to engage community members and social change leaders in an educational experience that will deepen their understanding of institutionalized racism and gain tactics and skills to make systemic and cultural change in their spheres of influence through action. Some of our secondary/tertiary prevention activities include: • Train and Support Trauma-Informed Community Organizations and Schools • The creation of a therapeutic court focused on families with children (0-36 months) that are entering the child welfare system within the Palmer Superior Court. • Improving the delivery of supervised family contact for families with children with out of home placement.

Member Duties : The Youth Leadership Council Coordinator position will primarily recruit, develop, and manage a youth leadership council. The primary target group would be 12-18 year olds who will receive training to support leadership development to help guide the work of R.O.C.K. Mat-Su, with the potential to serve as youth voices on the boards/committees of our community partners as well. The youth who participate will develop leadership, public speaking, and critical thinking skills, be exposed diverse ideas and situations, and have the opportunity to meet new role models in their community. Current members of the YLC have identified healthy relationships as the focus of their first project titled “Common Roots Hike.” Project goals are to encourage youth to engage in the community, promote healthy relationships, develop peer facilitators with conflict resolution skills, provide a supportive environment with active engagement, and create positive social connections among youth.
