Patriot Resilient Leader Ins. Outreach/Development VISTA
The Patriot Resilient Leader Institute (PRLI) runs Camp Resilience to provide sustained, comprehensive programs to help veterans recover their physical, mental and emotional well-being. Using the scenic beauty of the Lakes Region of New Hampshire as its backdrop and home base, Camp Resilience provides sports, adventure activities and life skills training for veterans and, in some cases, their families. In addition to the sports and life skills activities, Camp Resilience also has an ongoing, sustained networking and follow-up program to provide continued support. The goal is to help the participants to succeed in life and to become leaders in their communities through their example of overcoming adversity. The goal is to help veterans: • Find meaning and purpose in life • Develop strong family and community relationship skills • Avoid and overcome destructive & addictive behavior • Learn financial management • Develop job search, resumes and interview skills • Make their lives count and pass this on to others through the power of their example Since its formation in 2014, the PRLI has run 30 Camp Resilience retreats serving over 270 veterans from all over New England. These retreats have focused on a variety of issues facing veterans to include Post-Traumatic Stress, Military Sexual Trauma, reintegration issues, resiliency and the challenges of the spouses or caregivers of disable veterans. There have been also been retreats for military couples and for women veterans only. We are planning on running 12 Camp Resilience sessions in 2018 and serving up to 150 veterans from all over New England. Some of the specific needs in the veteran community that the Camp Resilience program are addressing include: • An above average unemployment and poverty rate, particularly for male veterans age 18 to 24 • Increased psychiatric problems for 18 to 20% of all veterans • A veteran suicide rate 2 to 4 times higher than the average
