NLADA Data Systems VISTA - Field NY OAD

Because the quality of justice in America should not depend on how much money a person has, NLADA leads a broad network of advocates on the front lines to advance justice and expand opportunity for all by promoting excellence in the delivery of legal services for people who cannot afford counsel. This new VISTA project, Defending Communities in Service, will build sustainable community relationships and data systems and practices that allow participating public defender offices to more holistically support communities in need. During the first year of this project VISTAs will build capacity within their host organizations focused on two separate tracks of service: Community Partnerships or Data Systems. The Data Systems VISTAs (that's you!) will serve as the driving force assisting their hosting Public Defender office to better understand the data that they have access to and how to utilize this data to better advocate for the needs of their programs and clients. Increased data awareness and system improvement will allow public defenders to more clearly understand the importance of their work on a community-wide level and to be able to guide their programs and organizational decisions based on data and proven programmatic success. All NLADA VISTA project members will explore opportunities to utilize technology and automation to create communication and data-sharing channels between public defenders and human services organizations designed to last beyond the period of their projects, with minimal maintenance required.

Member Duties : The Office of the Appellate Defender (OAD) seeks a VISTA member to bolster OAD’s ability to manage and distill information from our cases, court decisions, and overall practice. This data is critically relevant to our clients and the functioning of the criminal justice system overall – e.g., whether the law is fairly applied by prosecutors, police officers, defense attorneys, and judges. Increasing OAD’s capacity to synthesize this data, and to preserve institutional knowledge, will improve our individual case litigation and foster a greater understanding of broader patterns impacting New York City’s criminal justice system, as well as increase the efficiency and efficacy of our practice. The VISTA member will help develop processes and database tools that our attorneys can implement to provide our clients and their communities more immediate relief from illegal, misguided and/or failed laws, policies and procedures.
