Opportunity Council - Sea Mar - Food Access VISTA

In the United States, 15% of the population is considered food insecure. However, food insecurity disproportionally impacts minorities such as the Latino Community. Moreover, among the Latino Community, there is a sector where the food insecurity is endemic: farmworkers, the backbone of the agriculture industry. Farmworkers, seasonal or migrant, are more than 400% more likely than the general public to lack the consistent ability to meet food needs. This VISTA member will strengthen Sea Mar’s effort to increase food security for the Latino Community in Whatcom County. The VISTA member will do a community health assessment on food insecurity in the target community, in collaboration with the health educators of Whatcom County. Additionally, they will maintain existent partnerships addressing food insecurity, to create a program that brings food to the people, but also provides education to become self-sustainable and increase self-advocacy through food budgeting, gardening class, etc. By increasing availability and access to quality nutritious food, and dietary counseling, it is expected that the target community will improve their eating habits, health outcomes, and self-advocacy. As well, it is expected that the program can increase and sustain community partnerships for one common goal: eliminate food insecurity.
