Complete Streets Transportation Program Specialist
 
 
 
This position is offered through the City and County of Honolulu ("City") AmeriCorps VISTA Program with support from the Corporation for National and Community Service. The mission of this program is to 1) address poverty, 2) build capacity, 3) empower communities, and 4) increase economic, social, and environmental resiliency across Oahu. Serving with the City Department of Transportation Services ("DTS"), this full-time VISTA position will play a key role in supporting low-income, transportation disadvantaged residents by building the capacity of the City’s Complete Streets program, which develops programs and projects that aim to create an integrated network of streets that are safe and convenient for all people, reflect community needs and character, and reduce climate change impacts island-wide. This position will work with DTS's Complete Streets Administrator and will support efforts to (1) inform the development of resilient and equitable transportation programs and investments, particularly in under-served communities; and (2) engage residents and communities around Complete Streets projects and encourage residents to become involved in the process of transforming their streets into safer and healthier spaces while alleviating transportation burdens. The ideal candidate for this position will have strong writing, communication, and community engagement skills; demonstrate knowledge in climate and sustainability science; and have a deep commitment to equity and climate resilience on O'ahu. This year-long position begins August 17, 2020 and is based in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Member Duties : The Complete Streets Transportation Program Specialist VISTA will build research, outreach, and engagement capacities of DTS to support development of sustainable Complete Streets projects, with particular focus on strategies that decrease transportation burdens for low-income residents. Specific activities include: (1) Update and assist in the execution of a Complete Streets communications plan; (2) Develop and deploy outreach strategies, including online and digital resources, with particular focus on those with disproportionate household transportation expenses; (3) Participate in public events and community presentations to increase awareness of the Complete Streets program and its benefits; (4) Analyze existing plans to determine future program project areas, particularly in areas under-served by past transportation investments; and (5) Conduct research to inform the development of equitable policies designed to serve diverse and often under-served transportation user groups.
