Familias en Acción Development and Communications VISTA

This position joins the Oregon Health Authority’s statewide VISTA team. In addition to activities at your individual site, each member receives additional orientation, training throughout the year, team retreats and meetings, and the support of the team leaders and project director based at the state public health agency. For more information about the Oregon Health Authority VISTA Partnership Program, please visit: http://healthoregon.org/vista. Familias en Acción’s mission is to promote empowerment and holistic family well being for Latinos through compassionate community engagement, education, research, and advocacy for social change. La misión de Familias en Acción es promover el empoderamiento y el bienestar integral de la familia para los latinos a través del compromiso compasivo de la comunidad, la educación, la investigación y la defensa del cambio social. While service provision is at the core of Familias en Acción services, we also engage in system-wide initiatives that address the root causes of health disparities, including poverty. One example in which Familias aims to change the structure that perpetuate poverty is by participating in two collaboratives that are advocating for health care systems to pay for food, housing, transportation as part of medical care. Another way is through Familias en Acción health education program which also trains community leaders, so they can become certified Community Health Workers and gain employment. The VISTA member will fully be integrated into Familias en Acción team, and will attend to any relevant professional development opportunities that Familias en Acción staff participates in. With the innovative public health work happening in Oregon, Portland is a wonderful place to explore a future in public health!
