We are unique, hosting events like the Oregon Country Fair and many national and international track and field events. Modern history founded this area in pioneer times and we have a robust forest industry that started in the 1800’s. Today, we are also proud to be home of the Juliana v. United States Youth Climate Lawsuit and to many native American original peoples that have called this region their home for millennia. Our health department serves Lane County, which extends from the Cascade Mountains to the Pacific Ocean and covers 4,722 square miles. Lane County Public Health is a division within the Health and Human Services Department. Being prepared for disasters is a priority for Lane County Public Health. We collaborate with emergency preparedness leaders at the local, state and federal levels and we develop plans collaboratively that seek to improve our response natural and human-made disasters. With the innovative public health work happening in Oregon, Eugene is a wonderful place to explore a future in public health!

Member Duties : The VISTA will focus on researching and drafting plans that build resiliency in economically disadvantaged and other vulnerable populations during disasters. The VISTA will build and expand capacity among the local public health system, local coalitions, community-based organizations, and the county to incorporate the needs of low-income and disproportionately affected populations into public health emergency preparedness plans. The VISTA project will be a vital connection to expand the reach of these programs to rural areas and to strengthen community groups outside the metro area that work with economically disadvantaged people. Asset mapping will build community resiliency and empowerment to better identify and leverage a community’s already existing strengths for serving low-income community members; central to that is involving the low-income community members in mapping and identifying how best to leverage outcomes.
