2019-2020 Policy Research and Analysis VISTA
 
 
 
Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights has operated as Chicago’s preeminent nonprofit civil rights legal organization since 1969. We are civil rights lawyers and advocates working to secure racial equity and economic opportunity for all. In the area of housing, Chicago Lawyers’ Committee focuses on systemic litigation and advocacy to combat housing discrimination and barriers to opportunity.The VISTA will work with Chicago Lawyers’ Committee’s housing and equitable development staff to advance the organization’s broader mission to promote racial equity and economic opportunity for all and mission of its housing work to combat housing discrimination and barriers to opportunity. Specifically, the VISTA will help develop materials such as memos, fact sheets, presentations, and reports from policy research and analysis that identify issues impacting communities that the organization serves and provide policy recommendations. Ultimately, the capacity building and policy research and analysis that the VISTA will work on will have a direct impact on Chicago Lawyers’ Committee’s effectiveness as an organization. An ideal candidate has strong analytical and communication skills and a demonstrated commitment to public service. Experience in racial justice work (or work on behalf of low-income communities and/or communities of color) or policy advocacy is a plus. Spanish language proficiency is a plus but is not required. This position is a part of the Housing Action VISTA Network, which is an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive expert training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Member Duties : By the end of the first month, the VISTA will develop a policy research plan relating to the strategic goals of housing and equitable development work. The VISTA will aim to identify at least five policy issues relating to housing and barriers to opportunity and equitable development to conduct factual research and data analysis during the service year and develop materials to inform staff members and communities served. By the end of the fourth month, the VISTA will be regularly producing written work products to Chicago Lawyers’ Committee staff as a result of the VISTA’s policy research and analysis. By the end of the eighth month, the VISTA will publicize ideas from the policy research and analysis and share them with community partners and other stakeholders. By the end, the VISTA will have presented on the policy research and analysis conducted and will have drafted at least one report or long-form article on one of the policy issues identified earlier in the service year.
