Washington Co At-Risk Population Program Development VISTA

This position joins the Oregon Health Authority’s statewide VISTA team. In addition to activities at your individual site, each member receives additional orientation, training throughout the year, team retreats and meetings, and the support of the team leaders and project director based at the state public health agency. For more information about the Oregon Health Authority VISTA Partnership Program, please visit: http://healthoregon.org/vista. This position is with Washington County Public Health Emergency Preparedness. We are committed to empowering our community and fostering resiliency by preparing for identified hazards, whether natural or man-made. Statistically we know that those with lower socioeconomic resources and limited English language proficiency are most at risk before, during and after a disaster. In Washington County we are working hard to foster social equity and mitigate the disparity within those communities. By providing culturally and linguistically appropriate training, we can begin to effectively address some of the impediments, benefitting those most at risk and the community as a whole. The VISTA will serve in Hillsboro, Oregon, the fifth-largest city in Oregon, lying in the Tualatin Valley on the west side of the Portland metropolitan area. Washington County is the state’s second most populous county with increasingly diverse communities. High tech industries dominate the economy of the county but agricultural is still a major industry creating a stark and beautiful contrast. With the innovative public health work happening in Oregon, Hillsboro is a wonderful place to explore a future in public health.

Member Duties : The VISTA will use the Washington County Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response (CASPER) data and build on the previous VISTA project at this site to define populations in Washington County that are at serious risk of permanent health and economic impacts from an emergency or disaster due to language barriers, functional or access needs and financial resource limitations. Using this data, the VISTA will support efforts to expand the Washington County Public Health Emergency Preparedness outreach and community education programs to ensure equal access by low income and vulnerable populations that are at serious risk of permanent health and economic impacts from an emergency or disaster. The trainings will be targeted to most vulnerable populations in culturally and linguistically appropriate formats to build self-sufficiency and resiliency.
