Community Empowerment VISTA

The Community Empowerment VISTA will serve participating communities across West Virginia to drive the change they want to see in their communities. Through research, event planning and coordination, curriculum-building, and grant writing, the VISTA will build the capacity of The Hub’s community empowerment programs to provide trainings and tools that will support community-driven economic development. From addressing abandoned and dilapidated properties to supporting community-led initiatives for building strong communities and economies, this VISTA project will provide a foundation on which The Hub can support local communities and officials in building strategies for visible and trackable community improvement that will increase the economic opportunity needed to pull people out of poverty.

Member Duties : The Community Empowerment VISTA will have three main objectives: 1. Support the Abandoned Properties Coalition (APC) in their efforts to become a sustainable and effective entity, independent from The Hub. 2. Support The Hub’s new Next Generation Communities Project initiative with Generation West Virginia to support community members in identifying initiatives that can help build stronger communities and economies in West Virginia by attracting and retaining young people. With The Hub and Generation WV, the VISTA will build teams of community members, local elected officials, and municipal staff who will work together to identify prioritized community characteristics for localized development that increases access to good jobs, a vibrant downtown, healthy communities, availability of social and cultural activities, and more. 3. Build programmatic capacity to build strategic, sustainable components for community empowerment
