Hot Springs, Montana is small rural community located on the Flathead India Reservation. The community and has an estimated population of 474, a median family income of $21,000, and a poverty rate of 28%. According to the Montana Office of Public Instruction, Hot Springs High School graduation rate is 81%, more than five points lower than Montana’s statewide rate. During phase one of the Heart and Soul program, an early action project identified as a serious need in Hot Springs was food insecurity, an issue inter-related to K-12 success. Food insecurity currently affects nearly 50 million people nationwide – most frequently, families with children. A recent Food Research & Action Center study revealed that as of April 2015, one in six households reported the inability to afford food. While the biggest stressor for most school-aged children might be homework, household chores, or who won the soccer game, for many others, getting a full, healthy meal is a greater concern. A wide body of research indicates that food insecurity and poor nutrition follow children into the classroom, often resulting in poor academic performance: Children from homes with persistent food insecurity have shown smaller gains in both reading and math than their food-secure counterparts; food-insecure children and teenagers have been shown to miss school more frequently, and are more likely to repeat a grade than food-secure children; and food insecurity has been shown to reduce a child’s chances of graduating from high school. By providing Hot Springs low income youth with access to free healthy foods and educating them about the importance of nutrition in order to succeed in school, these kids have a greater chance of staying in and succeeding in school.

Member Duties : The VISTA will work closely with Salish Kootenai College's Tech4Good program in the area of food sovereignty and the school garden. The mutual goal of the community and Tech4Good program is to build capacity using a collective impact model and includes connecting elders with youth around local food growing and sharing meals together. The VISTA will assist in recruiting more volunteers for the Heart & Soul project, a community-led effort to enact positive change in Hot Springs. They will assist sub-teams designated to plan public awareness activities and fund raising. They will assess educational needs, especially those related to hunger and food security. They will help develop the two already stated needs of the community: An existing portable food truck to provide free food where needed, and also build a program resulting in a sustainable sales outlet for the kid’s co-op products from the garden, making value added products to be sold at farmers markets and an online market.
