* AmeriCorps VISTA Home ReSource and the University of MT

Home Resource, a local nonprofit in Missoula, serves a community where over 20% of families in the surrounding neighborhoods are entrenched in multi-generational poverty cycles. As a nonprofit, the organization is seeking to build a robust volunteer program that exposes low-income community members to trade skills, with the hope that many will complete a course of study or credential with a trade school. Over 400 customers come through the Home ReSource doors each day, including many of the neighborhood’s low-income community members who rely on access to affordable maintenance, repair, and building materials. This project will work strategically to increase volunteer engagement from university students and community members for three primary purposes: provide students with a connection to their larger community; provide students with formative educational opportunities and experience with the real, gritty, multi-faceted work of building a sustainable, equitable, environmentally and socially conscious organization and community; foster mentoring opportunities and cross-cultural connections by bringing student and community volunteers together with Home ReSource staff to share experiences and model pathways to viable educational and employment opportunities. This robust volunteer program with diverse community partners will provide low-income community members with opportunities to take steps towards furthering their education and developing tangible, marketable skills, connection and belonging in community with mentors and models, and a pathway out of poverty.
