Stewards VISTA: Sheep Mountain Alliance

Sheep Mountain Alliance is a 30-year-old nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of the environment in the Telluride region and southwest Colorado. We strive to protect regional ecosystems, wildlife habitats, and watersheds through advocacy, activism, and outreach that empowers and educates our community. This VISTA position offers an excellent opportunity to work first hand on environmental issues ranging from mining cleanup to forest health, while gaining experience in community organizing, nonprofit administration, and public lands policy. The Sheep Mountain Alliance (SMA) Community Stewards VISTA will address three primary needs in their host community. The first is a lack of understanding and participation on public lands issues, as well as a trend toward privatization of public lands. The second is diversification and engagement of a broader constituency for the environment, and the third is exploration of alternatives to revitalize a foundering economy in the West that has historically relied on mining and oil and gas drilling, to the detriment of communities, wildlife, and ecosystems. As the VISTA Community Engagement Coordinator at SMA, the member will take on these issues through outreach, education, stewardship, and innovation. They will work with elected officials, business leaders, a variety of stakeholders, and interested citizens to create meaningful and inclusive engagement on public lands issues. They will curate educational and experiential opportunities that are both relevant and accessible, and by forging new relationships and collaborations in former mining communities, with local Latinx leaders, and with tribal entities, will contribute to a vision of a long-term, sustainable future for our region of rural Colorado.
