PAARI National Recovery Corps- Fraser, MI 2

PAARI was founded alongside the Gloucester Police Dept. Angel Initiative in June 2015 and has grown into a movement of 465 law enforcement partners in 33 states. The opioid epidemic is our country’s greatest public health emergency and there were more than 72,000 drug related overdose deaths in the US in 2017. Only 11% of people who need access to treatment for a substance use disorder receive care. Access to treatment is particularly difficult for individuals experiencing homelessness, unemployed individuals, low income adults, formerly incarcerated adults, low-income veterans, and those with concurrent physical health issues and mental health disorders. Law enforcement officers have a front row seat to the opioid epidemic and a growing number of police depts are motivated to adopt non-arrest programs that connect individuals with substance use disorders to treatment. Members of our National Recovery Corps will strengthen the ability of partnering law enforcement agencies to increase access to care and address addiction and poverty through non-arrest approaches. This program will place VISTAs in police dept. to help build, strengthen, and sustain police-led programs to reduce and prevent overdose deaths and help people with opioid use disorder get into treatment and recovery. This position will be in Fraser, MI to serve as part of a larger cohort of PAARI National Recovery Corps VISTAs, spread across the entire nation, from ME to WA, from MI to AZ. Families Against Narcotics is a community-based program for all those affected by addiction and community supporters. A person struggling can come to any of the participating agencies and ask for help. Since Feb. 2017, FAN’s Hope Not Handcuffs is located in 73 Police Agencies across Michigan and have served over 2800 participants since its inception. Individuals with lived experience with addictions, including those who are personally in recovery, are ideal candidates for these service positions.
