MSU Northern provides higher education to students for professional and technical careers through an institution dedicated to teaching and the pursuit of knowledge. We seek to promote student centered and culturally enriched environment which fosters student success. We partner with external entities to enhance and expand learning experiences. The university provides liberal arts, professional and technical programs that serve a diverse student population of college students. The AmeriCorps leader will mentor first generation and low income high school students through a variety of college access activities including leadership, financial literacy and FAFSA support.

Member Duties : Mentor first generation and low income freshmen college students at MSU-Northern and local high school students. Facilitate educational workshops designed to retain college students by proactively responding to time management, test anxiety, financial literacy, study skills, self-care. Engage college students in educational and social programs designed to enrich the on-campus environment and provide leadership and guidance for college student leaders. Mentor high school students and facilitate "Experience College" overnight activities designed to attract students to consider attending college and FAFSA workshops designed to assist students and their parents who might not otherwise complete it. Expose high school students to career options. Since we already attract a significant number of first generation (33%) and low income (84%) students, retention efforts will be a large part of service activities including individualized mentoring opportunities.
